Biography

Dr. Schöneich joined KU's Department of Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1991, where he serves as professor and chair. He previously held positions at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute Berlin, Germany, and Brunel University Uxbridge, London, England. Dr. Schöneich's research interest is in the oxidative post-translational modification of proteins in vitro and in vivo, and he is recognized internationally as an expert on molecular oxidation and human aging and degenerative diseases. His research group focuses on the detection and characterization of covalent oxidative post-translational modifications of proteins in vivo and in vitro. They are interested in the mechanisms by which these oxidative modifications form in tissues and in pharmaceutical formulations, and their biological or pharmaceutical impact.

Dr. Schöneich received the Dolph Simons Research Award in Biosciences in 2010, which recognizes research achievement in the biomedical sciences to an individual who may be described as having had a major and substantial impact and who has been of national and/or international interest. He is a four-time recipient of the Pfizer Research Scholar Award. Dr. Schöneich has served as Assessor with the Australian Research Council, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Coriolis Pharma, Munich, Germany, and is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS).
