Biography

Dr. Roediger joined the KU Department of History in 2014 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was an American Kendrick C. Babcock Professor of History. He previously held teaching positions at Northwestern University, University of Missouri and University of Minnesota, where he was Chair of the American Studies Program. 

At KU where he has a joint appointment in History and American Studies, Dr. Roediger teaches and writes on race and class in the United States. His research interests include the construction of racial identity, class structures, labor studies, and the history of American radicalism. An internationally recognized historian, his books include "An Ordinary White: My Antiracist Education," "The Sinking of the Middle Class," "Class, Race, and Marxism," "Seizing Freedom," "Working Toward Whiteness" and "The Wages of Whiteness," which won a Merle Curtis Award from the Organization of American Historians.

Dr. Roediger served as president of the American Studies Association in 2015 and 2016.
