Biography

Dr. Pierce is the Christine A. Hartley Centennial Endowed Professor of Nursing and holds appointments as a professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, as well as the Department of Cardiology. She teaches courses in both the DNP and PhD programs, focusing on precision health, symptom science, biomarkers, and advanced pathophysiology. Dr. Pierce also spent several months as a Visiting Professor at the University of Canberra in Australia. In addition to her academic responsibilities at the School of Nursing, she retired as a Captain after 25 years in the United States Navy.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Pierce has been studying antioxidants in various diseases to determine the effects on the diaphragm, lungs, myocardium, brain and kidneys. She has had continuous research funding at KUMC for more than 30 years, including from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging and Department of Defense. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).
