Biography

Dr. Pierce holds appointments as a professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology and the Department of Cardiology. She teaches courses in both the DNP and PhD programs, focusing on precision health, symptom science, biomarkers, and advanced pathophysiology. Dr. Pierce also spent several months as a visiting professor at the University of Canberra in Australia, and she retired as a Captain after 25 years in the United States Navy. 

Her research focuses on antioxidants in various diseases to determine the effects on the diaphragm, lungs, myocardium, brain and kidneys. She has had research funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging and Department of Defense. 

Dr. Pierce is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), and has received the Research Trailblazer Award from Kansas Chapter of American College of Cardiology and the Ada Sue Hinshaw Award from the National Institute for Nursing Research.
