Biography —
Dr. Johnson came to KU's Department of Geography & Atmospheric Science from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. His research focuses on the broad area of Indigenous peoples' cultural survival — predominately in New Zealand, the Pacific and North America — with specific regard to the areas of resource management, political activism at the national and international levels and the philosophies and politics of place which underpin the drive for cultural survival. In addition to his teaching and research positions, Dr. Johnson has served as Associate Chair of Geography & Atmospheric Science and Director of the Center for Indigenous Research, Science, and Technology.
His books include "A Deeper Sense of Place: Stories and Journeys of Indigenous-Academic Collaboration" and "Being Together in Place: Indigenous Coexistence in a More-than-Human World," both co-authored with Soren C. Larsen. Dr. Johnson has spoken internationally, including in Greenland, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.
