Biography —
Dr. Soberón joined KU in 2005 after a decade at the National University of Mexico and 13 years at Mexico's national biodiversity agency (CONABIO). In addition to his academic role in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, he also serves as Senior Scientist in Biodiversity Modeling in the KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum.
His research interest is in documenting and understanding large-scale spatial patterns in the biodiversity of terrestrial species. In collaboration with computer scientists and colleagues in other universities, Dr. Soberón is exploring the integration of alternative views of biodiversity like distributional data, phylogenetic data, data about interactions, and others with current database information. A world-renowned scholar in interdisciplinary biodiversity science and ecology, he has been pivotal in establishing KU as a world leader in the field of biodiversity informatics.
Dr. Soberón is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has twice been recognized by Thompson-Reuters as a Highly-cited Researcher.
