Biography

Dr. Shiflett joined KU in 2016 after serving as a Technical Fellow at DuPont and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Delaware. In addition to his academic positions in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the Department of Bioengineering, he also serves as Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center - EARTH and Director of the Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering. His research interests include development of sustainable, energy efficient processes and product, including ionic liquids for separations, clathrate hydrates for desalination and security markers.

Elected in 2019 as a Fellow in the National Academy of Inventors, Dr. Shiflett is an inventor on 40 U.S. patents. He received the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Institute award for Industrial Research in 2016 and is a Fellow in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Division Fellow in the American Chemical Society. In 2022 Prof. Shiflett he was ranked in the top 2% of Scientists worldwide by Stanford University.

Dr. Shiflett is principal investigator on a $26 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to establish a new Gen-4 Engineering Research Center (ERC) — the Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH) — that will create a sustainable and circular refrigerant economy.
