Biography

Dr. Soares joined the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1984 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and serves as Director of the Institute for Reproduction and Perinatal Research at the University of Kansas and Director of the Center for Perinatal Research at the Children’s Research Institute, Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Dr. Soares’ research program focuses on regulatory processes associated with pregnancy, especially events controlling the development of the hemochorial placenta.

Internationally recognized in the field of developmental and regenerative biology, his research has been continuously supported by the NIH for the past 25 years. Dr. Soares’ research program focuses on regulatory processes associated with pregnancy, especially events controlling the development of the hemochorial placenta. His laboratory investigates specialized survival strategies used by the embryo as it grows within the mother's womb, including the formation of the placenta and how how early stem cells develop into the placenta. He has been recognized by the University of Kansas School of Medicine with a Faculty Research Award, by the University of Tokyo with a Distinguished Visiting Scientist Award, the University of Kansas Chancellor's Club Research Award in and the Higuchi Research Achievement Award.
