Biography

Dr. Rohrschneider joined KU's Political Science department in 2008 from the University of Indiana-Bloomington, where he served as Chair of the Comparative Politics group in the Department of Political Science. He also has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions, including the University of Vienna, Oxford University, University of Mannheim, Mannheim, Germany, and Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2023 he received a Fullbright Scholar Award  to travel to Austria to conduct research on European illiberal parties. Dr. Rohrschneider's academic and research interest is in comparative public opinion, political parties, and democratic representation in western and Central-Eastern Europe.

His books include "Learning Democracy. Democratic and Economic Values in Unified Germany," which won the 1998 Stein Rokkan prize from the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), and "The Strain of Representation. How Parties Represent Diverse Voters in Western and Eastern Europe" (co-authored with Stephen Whitefield). His articles have been published by such journals as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, and Comparative Political Studies. His research has been supported by fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, German Marshall Fund, and the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS).
