Dr. Soper joined KU in 2016 and holds joint appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering. He was previously a faculty member in the University of North Carolina/North Carolina State University Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering and the UNC Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Soper’s research largely focuses on the development of biomedical devices and the associated assays. In particular, his group concentrates on the development of in-vitro cancer diagnostics based on a combination of innovative methods for isolating circulating tumor cells and the development of nanoscale devices for next-generation sequencing. Often referred to as lab-on-a-chip technologies, Dr. Soper's efforts pinpoint diagnostics for cancer, stroke and infectious diseases, as well as bringing diagnostics to the point of care.

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and has received the Ralph N. Adams Award in Bioanalytical Chemistry, the R&D 100 Award, the Shannon Award from the National Institutes of Health and the Whitaker Foundation Award.
